DRESS YOURSELF: Kate Lanphear on defining her own style
Fashionindie.com shows Kate Lanphears transition from dressing to "play the part" as an assistant of a fashion magazine to defining her own style as the Senior Style Director of Elle Magazine. As an assistant, Kate confessed that there was so much pressure to dress a certain way, so she felt she had to "fake it to make it." She mimicked the style of Carolyn Bessette, the it girl at the time, and found herself "wearing LBDs at an appropriate but unflattering length, with pointy ladylike slingbacks." But as her career soared, she no longer wanted to fake it - " I thought, ‘Screw it, I’m wearing the jeans to the interview with the editor in chief.” I wanted to see what would happen if I was real. I remember telling her, “I’m not your typical fashion editor. I work hard and I know my stuff, but you should know, I’ll be the one wearing acid-wash jeans.’ I got the job.”
